The CPS released figures covering January 2018 to September 2023 for offences under section 61 of the Sexual Offences Act.
Why this matters
These figures count offences, rather than defendants or cases. They do not include all reports made to police.
The Act’s explanatory notes clarify that selection: section 61 addresses non-consensual administration intended to stupefy or overpower someone for sexual activity. The intended sexual activity need not actually occur. Its statistical scope is therefore narrower than the full range of drink-tampering incidents and cannot represent them all.
Context matters
The document illuminates part of the justice response in England and Wales; it should not be presented as the overall number of spiking incidents.
The date refers to the linked original publication. This summary preserves the context at that date.
