California’s state regulator announced that AB 1013 would require these businesses to offer devices detecting certain substances in drinks from July 1, 2024. Visible signage had to inform customers that tests were available.
Scope and later update
Devices could be supplied free or sold at a reasonable price linked to wholesale costs. The requirement did not cover every restaurant or the entire United States. ABC does not endorse brands, and individual tests need not cover every substance.
Context matters
Update: October 9, 2026. ABC announced that AB 1982 had removed the scheduled expiry of these obligations.
